Emma Stone in Broadway’s ‘Cabaret’ Review: Fulfills Childhood Dream by Playing Sally Bowles
Fans of actress Emma Stone will be excited to learn that she recently showcased her talent for singing and dancing during her Broadway performance in the musical 'Cabaret'.
'Cabaret' is a musical set in a Berlin cabaret club during the early '30s, the era when the Nazi first rose to power. Fortunately for fans of the show, Stone was cast in the Tony-winning musical to play the role of Sally Bowles.
The 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' star performed in New York City in November as Bowles, and now thanks to a video that was posted online, fans can now see her in action on stage.
Stone seemed very comfortable on the stage of a major Broadway production as she wore a red feather boa wrapped around her and a leather jacket over a lacey black getup.
Viewers who caught sight of the actual performance, or those that saw it in a video could easily say that Stone was able to hold her own with her dance moves and theatrical facial expressions.
With her performance on 'Cabaret', Stone can now say she fulfilled one of her childhood dreams.
During the interview, Stone that said her character, Bowles, was like "Hamlet for women," and said that she had wanted to play Bowles since she was 10-years-old and saw Natasha Richardson perform on stage.
Alan Cumming, who is the ongoing Emcee for 'Cabaret', said in the interview that Bowles is "vulnerable, tragic, funny, unlikable, heartbreaking."
"It's unusual for young actresses to get such completeness in a role," he said, talking about Stone.
Stone admitted she had never been as obsessed with any other character or story as she was with Bowles, and that she still couldn't believe this was happening to her.
On stage, Stone is joined by Cumming, Benjamin Eakeley, Stacey Sipowicz, Kaleigh Cronin, Andrea Goss and more. She follows in the footsteps of many others who have performed as Bowles, such as Jean Ross, Julie Harris, Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, Michelle Williams and more.
