Emery Debut 'The Beginning' on Break it Down Podcast; New Songs off 'You Were Never Alone' Continue to Please [LISTEN]
Christian rock band Emery unveiled the fourth track off their upcoming album You Were Never Alone yesterday on their Break It Down Podcast.
The song, "The Beginning" plays toward the end of the podcast, which can be heard, on New Noise Magazine here.
Opening up with a splash of instruments and vocals, the abrupt start throws the listener right into a swell of great harmonies and a groovy bass line. The duel vocals are masterfully done as in the first part singer Toby Morrell does the lead part with guitarist Devin Shelton doing the harmony. In the next section they flip roles with Shelton singing lead and Morrell doing the harmony.
Further on down the song they have their signature three-part vocal of the two vocalists singing and screaming vocals happening at the same time. The song then ends with hushed vocal and powerful lyrics.
During the podcast, co-host Matt Carter said the song was "one of the most collaborative" on the album. Morrell worked on it lyrically and created the melody. Carter then went in and tweaked certain things and added elements to the song which he deemed making the song "better."
Morrell says the song is about the "illusion that it will get better...you can't get back what you lost." The theme sounds bleak, but Morrell admits that not everything in our Christian life gets a happy ending.
Last week the band debuted the song "Hard Times", which can be heard here.
"Hard Times" helps mark the completely different sounds the album has already featured on the three tracks. "Rock, Pebble, Stone" was sort of a soft ballad with intense harmonies. They made fun of themselves and called it an emo "Wussy Song." The second track, "Thrash" is appropriately named and the band's heaviest track to date. The song is quite diverse, and features that hardcore element they mentioned, but then breaks down into a lovely jazzy/blues section. With this structure, the song becomes almost like a prog track, and really does a 180.
"Hard Times" is kind of in the middle, but falls more into Emery's punky style while incorporating screams.

This podcast is separate from their already popular Bad Christian Podcast, and is run by band members Carter and vocalist Toby Morrell. Emery's upcoming album You Were Never Alone, will be debuted in its entirety over the period of 12 weeks with one new song premiering per episode and the album dropping on May 19 on BC Music.
