Embrace Smartwatch News: Predicts Seizures & Monitors Stress Levels, Indiegogo Campaign Raises Over $200,000

A campaign posted on Indiegogo showcases a new smartwatch called Embrace, which is built to track the wearer's activities, analyze their stress levels, and predict the event of an incoming seizure, Digital Trends reported.

The Embrace has been years in the making and was started in 2007 by Dr. Rosalind W. Picard of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Empatica team. They wanted to build a device that was not only wearable but also measured emotions and stress levels.

The Empatica team's efforts first resulted in the iCalm, which was mainly geared to monitor the wearer's stress before a student realized that it could also predict seizures. Spurred by the discovery, the team decided to focus on improving the capability of the device's sensors to detect the wearer's electrodermal activity, which are emitted from the skin and can predict seizures.

They also decided to work hand in hand with Pearl Studios and the designers of Misfit Shine to make the Embrace smartwatch more consumer friendly and attractive. What they came up is similar to an iPad Shuffle that was attached to a leather strap, complete with a touchscreen and came in a variety of sizes.

Embrace was built with polished metal, has a circular face, comes with a magnetized Italian leather band and has a battery life that can last up to six months if the watch is only used to tell time, according to Slash Gear.

The Indiegogo campaign has so far raised $196,000 to produce the Embrace smartwatch. This is nearly double their initial goal of $100,000, but they are still urging more people to help back the project and spread word about the project. For those who pledge $349, they are also prepared to offer two Embrace smartwatches, one of which will be donated to a child with epilepsy.

Empatica also uploaded a video on their YouTube channel, promoting Embrace and urging interested parties to support the project or hopefully purchase an Embrace smartwatch of their own.
