Eli Manning NFL 2015 News, Rumors: New York Giants QB Looks to be Highest-Paid Player in the League?
Following the lucrative extensions inked by Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers, members of the 2004 quarterback draft class, another fellow 2004 draft alum is looking to sign a similarly pricey deal, as New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and his agent Tom Condon have reportedly been angling to be the highest-paid player in the league, according to Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network.
The Giants have expressed hope to sign Manning to a new deal before the start of the season, but according to Rapaport, there remains a "significant gap" in the negotiations.
"That gap is unlikely to close anytime soon, as Manning is pushing to become the game's highest-paid player," Rapaport said on Monday's edition of "NFL Total Access."
According to the report, Condon believes Manning is "uniquely suites" to be the Giants' quarterback as he has proven to be more than able in handling the New York media spotlight. There is also the possibility of Manning headed for a $25 million payday in 2016 should the Giants be forced into using the exclusive franchise tag.
As noted by CBSSports.com, Manning is entering the final season of a six-year, $97.5 million deal, and is set to make $17 million in base salary in 2015. Manning has a cap hit of $19.5 million (which includes workout and roster bonuses), which stands as the third-highest among quarterbacks, behind Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. As pointed out by CBSSports.com, though, his average salary of $16.25 million on his current deal stands as "just" 17th in the NFL.
The report also notes a scenario in which Manning could become the highest-paid player in the league. That scenario entails him targeting a four-year deal that contains a slightly higher guarantee than Rivers.
Condon can also push for an average annual salary higher than Aaron Rodgers' $22 million per by pointing out that the deal signed by the league MVP two years ago no longer reflects the current market value of quarterbacks.
