Ebola Outbreak News Latest 2014: Doctor Dies From Disease in Nebraska Hospital, Infected in Sierra Leone
Dr. Martin Salia, a surgeon who was being treated at a Nebraska hospital for Ebola has died. Dr. Salia came in contact with the disease while working in Sierra Leone medical facilities. When he realized he contacted the disease, he became extremely ill and went to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment.
Sierra Leone is believed to be the source of the Ebola outbreak, which has killed more then 5,000 people in its history. Ebola often begins with flu-like symptoms, and progressing slowly, eventually leads to internal bleeding and organ failure.
Salia, who was 44-years-old became the second person to die from Ebola in the U.S. The first person to have died is believed to have contacted the disease while in Liberia, and died last month in Dallas.
According to the Nebraska Medical Center, Dr. Salia was checked-in at a much worse state than other patients who had been successfully treated for this terrible disease, so the doctors couldn't do much for him.
Salia has a wife and two children with a current residence in Maryland. One of his sons, Maada, told NBC News that although his father knew the risks of working in West Africa, he wanted to help people regardless.
