NBA 2015 News: All Star Kevin Durant to Practice with Team USA
After being hobbled by a foot injury the entire 2014-15 season, Kevin Durant is getting closer to finally returning to action. As reported by USA Today, Durant's agent, Rich Kleiman of Roc Nation and his manager Charlie Bell, said their client plans to practice with Team USA on Tuesday and Wednesday at the minicamp in Las Vegas. The former MVP, however, will not be playing at the showcase game on Thursday at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.
Durant played in just 27 games last season after having surgery on a Jones fracture last Oct. 16. He returned to action on Dec. 2, but had to sit out again in mid-February when his troublesome foot required a second surgery on the same injury. The second procedure was to replace a screw in his right foot that had been inserted during the first procedure. On Mar. 31, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Durant would be having a third surgery on the foot and would be out four to six months.
Back in July, USA Today reported that the former scoring champion planned on attending Team USA's minicamp, but was not expected to play. As noted by the report, Team USA managing director made it clear that players who want to take part in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil must make an appearance in Las Vegas.
As Sam Amick of USA Today points out, 34 player are expected to attend the Team USA gathering, which includes the entire roster that won gold at the FIBA World Cup in Spain last summer, along with eight gold medal winners from the 2012 London Olympic Team.
Durant was a member of the 2012 Olympic Team, and followed that up by helping the team win gold at the World Championships in Turkey. Last summer, he cited fatigue as his reason for not competing in the FIBA World Cup.
