Duke University Basketball News: Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Reaches 1,000 Wins

Four NCAA titles, 11 trips to the Final Four, two FIBA World Championships, another two at the Olympic Games, and now 1,000 wins, it seems that Duke University's head basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, is on some major roll.

Mike Krzyzewski won his 1,000th NCAA game Sunday when his Duke Blue Devils rode a scorching 18-2 run to win against St. John's 77-68 at Madison Square Garden.

Tyus Jones (22 points), Jahlil Okafor (17 points and 10 rebounds), and Quinn Cook (17 points) led the game-breaking run after Duke trailed by 10 with just over eight minutes left in the game.

The milestone made one of the most dominant college basketball coaches of all time the first coach to get to 1,000 wins in the NCAA Division I.

"There will be others that win more, but it's kind of neat to be the first one to 1,000," said Krzyzewski.

Madison Square Garden has been a familiar place for Krzyzewski when it comes to setting records. He got his 903rd win against Michigan State back in November 2011 to break the previous Division I record held by his college coach, Bob Knight.

In a released statement, Knight said, "It's a remarkable accomplishment to win as many games as Mike has as a coach. However, being able to coach as well as he has for as many years as he has is even more remarkable."

"To win the 1,000th here, you need to be a lucky guy. I like my place, Cameron, but this is a magical place," Krzyzewski said.

A crowd of 19,812 trooped to the "Mecca of Basketball," which included close to 20 of Krzyzewski's former players, St. John's greats Chris Mullin and Felipe Lopez, as well the New York Knicks' Phil Jackson, and Carmelo Anthony, reports ESPN.

The 67-year-old coach is now 1,000-308 in a coaching career that spans 40 years, 35 of which are with the Blue Devils.
