Dreamhack 'Hearthstone' Championship 2014 Recap: Kolento Crowned Grand Finals Match Winner [VIDEO]
The Dreamhack Hearthstone Championship has officially ended and showcased a lineup of players that were eager to get their hands on the $25,000 prize pool.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, eSports players all over the world gathered at DreamHack Winter in Jonkoping, Sweden to witness the championship matches.
Overall, there were 32 teams that battled for the total prize money. 24 teams out of the 32 were invited to participate in the tournament, while the other 8 secured their slots by winning in online competitions.
The eight best DreamHack Hearthstone players across the world first went through a Single Elimination match then off to the Quarterfinals before heading into the Semifinals and lasty, the Grand Finals.
During the final day of the tournament, many of the favorites during the Group Battle were eliminated, leaving only Faramir, LifeCoach, Firebat, ThijsNL, Cipher, StrifeCro, Nelrea, and Kolento to battle it out.
After the top eight moved to the playoffs, the final four players were revealed: LifeCoach, ThijsNL, StrifeCro and Kolento.
LifeCoach and ThijsNL battled it out, but in the end, it was Thijs who claimed victory as he defeated lifeCoach three times using his Druid.
Meanwhile, in the match between Kolento's Control Warrior and StrifeCro's Secrets Mage, Kolento had to use Duplicate which took the game into Fatigue, and with only three health left, he was able to finish off the game.
For the grand finals, it was ThijsNL versus Kolento. If Thijs would win, it will be his second consecutive first place finish in this championship.
However, after going through a tough match with StrifeCro, Kolento was surely not going down without a fight.
Round after round, Kolento was able to fight off Thijs and at some point, he was able to dominate the field with his wise choice of minions to play. In the end, he took the series tournament 4-2 against ThijsNL.
Kolento, as the first place winner, took home $10,000, ThijsNL got US$5,000, the third and fourth placers will both get $2,000 while the top fifth to eight finishers took home $1,250 each, according to DreamHack.
The game has one of the most diverse eSports community of "any title in existence," having over 20 million registered players worldwide.
