'Dragon Quest Heroes' PS4 News: JRPG Franchise Headed West

The Dragon Quest series has long been seen in the western part of the world, sticking close to home in Japan. However, after many fans longing for its return, SquareEnix announced that Dragon Quest Heroes will be coming to the PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe sometime this year.

Dragon Quest Heroes is an action JPRG with similar styles to other games from the genre such as Dynasty Warriors and Nintendo's Hyrule Warriors. A release date for the game is yet to be determined, but will be coming within the year. The game will come as a hard copy and a digital download.

Dan Seto, SEJ West Community Manager said at the PlayStation Blog, "The protagonists must rise up against insurmountable odds, challenging swarms of enemies and conquering gigantic monsters in an exhilarating action game. Filled with characters and monsters designed by world-renowned artist Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest Heroes is brought to PS4 in beautiful HD."

According to Tech Times, the west has not seen a Dragon Quest game in five years. Fan of the series have missed out on titles such as Dragon Quest VII, Slime Morimori 3 and 3D remakes of Monsters and Monsters 2.

Fans have used social media to get Square Enix's attention, protesting that they want more "heavy JRPGs" on Twitter alone, the #DragonQuestForTheWest hashtag has circled through the site and has been a worldwide trending topic on more than one occasion. A theory as to why the Dragon Quest games have not been released for the west is the work it would take to translate the text. JRPGs are text-heavy and to translate them all would be quite a feat. With Dragon Quest Heroes being an action JRPG, there's not as much text so making it western-friendly isn't a problem.

Fans of the game eagerly await an official release date for Dragon Quest Heroes.
