"Dragon Ball Super" episode 49 revealed an unexpected twist when Goku met his doppelganger in the future.

Titled "A Message from the Future! Black Goku Invades!" the episode followed Goku as he came face to face with the new villain, Black Goku.

Black Goku chased Future Trunks as he travelled back to the present time to seek Goku's help. Future Trunks escaped the future and returned to the present time to escape Black Goku, who sought to annihilate the future earth.

Future Trunks was an eye witness of how the villain singlehandedly destroyed the future. He knew how powerful Black Goku was that he recognized it was necessary to go back to the present time and ask for Goku's help. However, Black Goku was adamant to take him down so he also travelled from the future into the present to follow and fight Future Trunks.

In the episode, Future Trunks realized that his power was not capable of defeating Black Goku. The villain's power was so strong that only the coming together of all the rest of the Saiyan powers could beat him. As shown in the official trailer for the episode, Goku and Vegeta tried to intervene by joining forces to help Future Trunks in taking down Black Goku.

While Goku was ready to fight his evil doppelganger, their actual fight did not transpire in episode 49. The episode only featured the hero and the villain's coming face to face with each other, but fans will have to wait for the succeeding episodes to witness their actual battle.
