'Downton Abbey' Season 6 News, Rumors: Will Maggie Smith Leave the Series?

In an interview with the UK's Sunday Times, Dame Maggie Smith hinted that she would not be appearing on the hit show "Downton Abbey" after Season 6.

Currently, the fifth season of the show ended Sunday night in the US while the sixth season is currently filming in Britain. While the show has had a shocking success in the past, it's looking like the series will not continue after the sixth season.

Smith said, "They say this is the last one, and I can't see how it could go on. I mean, I certainly can't keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We're into the late 1920s."

Smith plays the sassy Lady Violet in Downton Abbey and has quite a fan base from the show. Smith added that the show has brought her more fame than she ever had in her life.

She said, "One isn't safe after doing 'Downton.' What's sad is I've gone through my whole life without any of that. I could go round galleries and things on my own and I just can't do it now." In the past, Smith has also told sources that the demanding schedule of a TV series has really worn her out.

Julian Fellowes, the show's creator, and Gareth Neame, the show's executive producer, have neither confirmed nor denied the show's continuance after Season 6. In an interview with The New York Times, Fellowes said that the show's fate rests in NBC Universal as they own the show now, not him. "I could walk away," he said, "But I wouldn't walk away. It's too much my baby."

Other sources report that other cast members are starting to look for other work. Fans of the show will just have to wait until definite plans have been made.
