'Downton Abbey' Season 6 News: Executive Producer Says Series is Coming to an End
The highly successful period drama, "Downton Abbey," will wrap up after the shooting the show's sixth season, to the disappointment of many of its fans.
Gareth Neame, the show's managing director and executive producer, said in a statement, "Inevitably there comes a time when all shows should end and Downton is no exception. We wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans. We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."
According to US Weekly, the show has won three Golden Globes and eleven Emmys since its 2011 television debut. The fifth season was seen by more than 25.5 million viewers.
The show revolves around the Crawley family and their servants during their trials and tribulations from pre-World War I England to the late '20s. The show has addressed sensitive topics for the times including rape and having a child out of wedlock.
In an interview with CNN, Neame said, "The idea of finishing these journeys is really appealing. It gives you so much great dramatic rocket fuel, and I hope it'll be the best season yet."
Neame went on to say that they might be doing movie as part of the show's official send off. Telling CNN he said that it would be a very interesting idea.
Many stars appear in "Downton Abbey" including Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville and more.
The sixth and final season of "Downton Abbey" will premiere in Britain in the fall and then will make its way to the US early next year.
