‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Spoilers - Series Returns to PBS Masterpiece in the U.S
Fans 'Downton Abbey' finally got their fix as the fifth season of the series premiered in the U.S last Sunday and received rave reviews and substantial viewership.
For those that may not know, the episode's setting takes place in 1924 when Lady Edith Crawley kept the secret of having a child named Marigold with the missing in action, Michael Gregson. Edith is conflicted with fact that she left her daughter in the care of local fireman Tim Drewe.
Due to her sadness, Edith tossed Gregson's book in the fireplace and slept while the fire started to consume the house. Butler Thomas Barrow noticed the smoke and rescued Edith.
Fire officers arrived along with Drewe who asked Edith to arrange a better plan for Marigold. The fire saved Barrow from being terminated by Lady Cora for blackmailing the maid Phyllis Baxter.
In a sudden turn of events, Baxter confessed to Cora that she was imprisoned for three years with the charge of stealing jewelry from her previous employer. Lady Cora decided to keep Baxter despite her confession.
As the fire has affected the personal lives of the characters including Robert Crawley, what's worse is that Robert discovered James Kent with Lady Anstruther in bed.
Meanwhile, Tony Gillingham asked Lady Mary directly to become her lover, while Mary agreed, she said no one should know about it.
Sarah Bunting who will be Tom Branson's future lover appeared in the middle of the drama. Lady Rose played cupid to Bunting and Branson while the Dowager Countess interfered in the love life of her best friend Lady Isobel.
The Dowager pointed out that Lord Merton only "wants what men wants." Isobel argued and the Dowager replied that she is only referring to "companionship."
As for the butler, Mr. Carson, his new position as the chairman of a WWI memorial committee over his boss, Robert pressured him.
"I feel a shaking of the ground I stand on, that everything I believe in will be tested and held up for ridicule over the next few years," Carson remarked in the episode.
Fans can continue to watch how Season 5 unfolds as 'Downton Abbey' returns every Sunday on PBS Masterpiece.
