Donald Sterling News: Former Los Angeles Clippers Owner Sues TMZ & Ex-Girlfriend
After filing for divorce recently, controversial billionaire Donald Sterling is in the news again for suing celebrity website TMZ and ex-girlfriend V. Stiiviano over the recording of his "off-color" remarks that ultimately cost him ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, the Associated Press reports.
According to the report, Sterling's lawsuit, which was filed on Friday in a Los Angeles Superior Court accused TMZ and Stiviano of violating his privacy and causing damage on a "scale of unparalleled and unprecedented magnitude."
The leaked recording heard the real estate mogul asking Stiviano not to associate herself with black people. That led to what the AP describes as a "firestorm of criticism" with the NBA eventually banning Sterling for life, and fining him $2.5 million.
"It's ridiculous if he says he was damaged by it when he made $2 billion," attorney Mac Nehoray, who represented Stiviano in a previous lawsuit, said referring to the amount the Clippers was sold for.
He also noted that Sterling doesn't have a claim to privacy because his remarks were made in front of Stiviano's sister.
"I think he's just a litigious person. Unless he has something going on in the public eye, he can't exist," Nehoray added.
As pointed out by the report, the latest suit was filed two days after Sterling filed for divorce from his wife, a few weeks shy of their 60th anniversary. He cited irreconcilable differences in the divorce paperwork filed.
His wife, Shelly Sterling, won approval for the sale of the Clippers by showing that her husband had dementia and could not properly handle his business affairs.
The AP report likewise notes that a recent court case forced Stiviano to relinquish a $1.8 million home, along with $800,000 in cash gifts, and a number of exotic cars.
Meanwhile, TMZ representatives didn't immediately reply to requests for comments as noted by the AP.
