‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special 2014 Release Date, Plot News: Is Clara Leaving the Series for Good?

'Doctor Who' is set to air its annual Christmas special and rumors have been circulating about whether or not Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald, will be leaving the show after the episode airs.

BBC released the official synopsis for "Last Christmas," and it served to either excite the fans or worry them over the fate of the Doctor's companion.

The synopsis read, "It's Christmas in the North Pole when the Doctor and Clara return to BBC AMERICA in an all-new Christmas special. Last year's special featured the emotional regeneration that marked the start of Peter Capaldi's run as the Twelfth Doctor. This year the Time Lord and his companion are in for an all-new adventure as stars Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are joined by Nick Frost (The Worlds End, Shaun of the Dead) as Santa Claus!"

BBC also announced that the episode will be directed by Paul Wilmshurst and written by Steven Moffat. Guest stars that will appear in the episode include Patrick Troughton, Michael Troughton, Faye Marsay, Nathan McMullen and Natalie Gumede.

The rumors of Coleman's possible departure came after a report appeared by Mirror claiming that Coleman originally planned to leave the show. There were plans for the upcoming holiday special to be her last episode for the series. However, an insider stated that she "had a change of heart" and decided to continue on accompany Peter Capaldi, who plays the Doctor.

BBC has refused to confirm or deny the rumors, claiming they were speculation and therefore did not need to be commented upon, according to a spokesperson who talked to Radio Times.

The spokesperson claimed that viewers and fans will need to tune into the show to find out if the rumors were true or not.

Coleman also talked to Radio Times and simply said that she has chosen to keep quiet about the matter.

"You get good at keeping secrets," the actress said, "The show is better for the surprises, so that's why we're being very evasive, very coy."

Doctor Who's "Last Christmas" will be airing on Dec. 25 on BBC.
