'Doctor Strange' Rumors, Cast News: Mads Mikkelsen Tapped for Villain Role

Production for Marvel's highly anticipated 'Doctor Strange' film is to go underway this fall, and the studio is going all in with the casting. It was recently rumored that 'Hannibal' star Mads Mikkelsen was offered a villain role in the film, however as to what role specifically hasn't been disclosed.

Currently, 'Sherlock' actor Benedict Cumberbatch is in the title role alongside Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

"Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Swinton will play Strange's mentor, the Ancient One, while Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange's nemesis," writes Variety.

Comic book 'Doctor Strange' villain Dormammu was recently rumored to be the big bad of next year's adaptation, making that the possible role for Mikkelsen.

Here's Marvel's brief description of the character:

"Born untold thousands or even millions of years ago in the dimension of the vastly powerful energy-entities called the Faltine, Dormammu and his sibling Umar gathered matter to themselves to increase their power, a practice anathema to their fellow Faltine, becoming their dimension's mightiest sorcerers. Ultimately slaying their parent Sinifer, they were driven from their home dimension, the Faltine deeming their garnering of such energy intolerable, and assumed human form to explore others. Their search for conquests brought them to the Dark Dimension, a mystic realm riddled with natural warps into pocket universes within the dimension itself. At the time of their arrival, the Dark Dimension's multi-species society had been at peace for almost 28,000 years and was in the third millennium of the rule of King Olnar."

It's rumored that the actor was sought out for a role in 'Thor: The Dark World,' but due to his commitments to the NBC show 'Hannibal,' he was forced to turn it down. The series has since been cancelled, freeing up his schedule and giving him opportunity to seek out film roles.

Mikkelsen has also been tapped to play a role in 'Star Wars: Rogue One.'

'Doctor Strange' will appear in theaters on November 4, 2016.
