'Doctor Strange' Release Date, Cast News: Tilda Swinton Tapped for Ancient One Role
Recent news links actress Tilda Swinton in Marvel's upcoming 'Doctor Strange' movie as the character, the Ancient One. It is reported that Swinton is currently in negotiations, and if the deal goes through she'll star opposite Benedict Cumberbatch as his mentor in the film.
Cumberbatch is set to star as Stephen Strange, a surgeon who loses the use of his hands and sets out to resurrect them with magic.
This is also pretty big news for fans of the comic series as the character has been classically portrayed as a male.
"Strange's mentor is a Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One, who is training pupils to be the next sorcerer supreme. In the comics, the character has been a male, and Marvel Studios initially was searching for a male actor. But the studio rethought the role and has now made it female. If a deal makes, Swinton will play the Ancient One," writes THR.
Swinton should have no problem getting into character for a comic book role, as she has had notable features in both 'Snowpiercer' and 2005's 'Constantine.'
"The actress will be seen with Amy Schumer in Judd Apatow's new comedy, Trainwreck, and has appeared in the last two Wes Anderson movies, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom. In between, she gave a show stopping performance as a brutally poised but unbalanced villainess in Snowpiercer, Joon-ho Bong's sci-fi movie that starred Chris Evans," writes THR.
'Doctor Strange' has a release date of November 4, 2016.
