'Doctor Strange' Cast News: Tilda Swinton May Portray An Ambiguous The Ancient One

Tilda Swinton's casting as the Ancient One in Marvel's upcoming 'Doctor Strange' film shocked a lot fans as the character has classically been male.

Although in a recent interview with The Guardian, it has now been said that Swinton isn't positive if she'll be portraying a male or female version of the character, possibly making him an ambiguous character.

"Swinton has been surprising audiences during her 30-year career, but what is perhaps most surprising is how this arthouse actor has embraced the commercial film industry, yet still managed to retain her cult quality. She will soon start shooting a Marvel blockbuster, Doctor Strange, but there is a Swinton-esque twist - she doesn't yet know if she will play the part as a man or a woman," writes The Guardian.

This may be an uncommon turn of events for the comic book world, however it wouldn't be for Swinton's career, as she's portrayed a male character on screen before.

"Maybe even more curious than Swinton's approach to the role is that Marvel is allowing her the freedom to handle it like this. With a character like the Ancient One, gender is, realistically, largely irrelevant, but the studio is known for wanting to keep meticulous control over just about every element. It seems unusual that this is even up for discussion, but perhaps that was discussed up front and is part of why Swinton took the part," writes Cinema Blend.

In the comics, the Ancient One is a character that is 500 years old and takes Stephen Strange under his/her wing to teach him magic, eventually allowing him to become the Sorcerer Supreme.

'Doctor Strange' plans on premiering in theaters on November 4, 2016.
