'Doctor Strange' News: Kevin Feige Addresses Ancient One Gender Swap
The production of Marvel's highly anticipated 'Doctor Strange' adaptation plans to get underway in November, and while there's so much that audience's doesn't yet know about the Sorcerer Supreme, the studio has some high aspirations for the project.
The film is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson with 'Sherlock' actor Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the lead role as Stephen Strange.
In a recent interview with Birth. Movies. Death, Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige gave a lot of insight on the kind of film fans can expect.
One of the first things he touched on was the gender-swapping casting decision of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One:
"As we were developing this film we looked at The Ancient One as a mantle more than a specific person. The sorcerers have been around for millennia, protecting us from things we didn't know about until this story. There have been multiple [Ancient Ones], even if this one has been around for five hundred years, there were others. This is a mantle, and therefore felt we had leeway to cast in interesting ways."
The 'Doctor Strange' comics have classically been one of the more out there and fantastical reads Marvel has ever produced. Feige explains how or if they plan to represent that in the film with a potential spoiler from the upcoming 'Ant-Man' film:
"We send Ant-Man on a very weird, mind-bending journey at the end of Ant-Man. It was something we hadn't seen in a shrinking movie before, but it also represents the tip of the mind-bending weirdness we're going to do in Strange, which I think will surprise people."
'Doctor Strange' plans to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
