Disney's New Live Action Movie News: All-New 'Mary Poppins' Movie in Development
Disney has successfully revived some of its animated classics like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella into live-action feature films, and now it is looking to revive its live-action movies too. The latest beloved classic to receive this treatment is Mary Poppins.
Variety has confirmed with sources that the hit musical that inspired a generation of tongues to be twisted by "supercalifragilistic" will be directed by Rob Marshall and produced by John DeLuca and Marc Platt.
The team also successfully worked together on Into the Woods, raking in $199 million worldwide for their work and earning Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination for her role as Witch.
When the original Mary Poppins came out in 1964, it dominated the box office, grossing $100 million and garnering five Oscars including the best actress award for Andrews.
The original film detailed how Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews), a magical nanny, floated into the home and life of the troubled Banks family and straightened them out.
Set in pre-World War I England, the film showcased the environment and mentality of the time.
The new film is set in Depression-era London, twenty years down from the original film.
It will continue to loosely followaseries of books written by P.L. Travers detailing the Banks family's adventures with the no-nonsense childminder.
Titles in the series include: Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins in the Park and Mary Poppins in the Kitchen.
With the original Poppins portrayed by the incomparable Andrews, Disney is hard-pressed to find an actress who can live up to the standards that she set.
There are hints that Anne Hathaway is leading the line to fill Andrew's shoes, according to bookmaker William Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly:
"Hollywood's leading ladies will all be vying for this role but given her striking resemblance to Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway is the early favorite."
Other contenders for the role include Emily Blunt, Ann Kendrick, Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep.
The original Mary Poppins also starred the indomitable Dick Van Duke as a lovable jack-of-all-trades and narrator of the story, and his shoes will also be difficult to fill.
