New 'Prince Charming' Movie News: Disney Announces Successor of ‘Cinderella’ Film; ‘Maleficent’ Inspires New Live Action Movie

The success of two live-action fairy tales movies have inspired Disney to produce a new live-action male-centric fairy tale based on a character from 'Cinderella,' one of the recent box office successes.

Quoting a report in Variety, IB Times reports that coming in the wake of 'Cinderella' and 'Maleficent,' the new live-action movie will follow Cinderella's love interest - Prince Charming. Variety claimed that sources told the publication that the film may center on the prince's brother, who fails to meet the royal expectations. The movie will be a comedy and written by Matt Foegel, who earlier worked with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.'

Both 'Cinderella' and 'Maleficent' were hugely successful at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, 'Cinderella' earned over $500 million for the company. The previous hit from Disney, 'Maleficent,' too garnered over $700 million in international ticket sales.

In fact, Disney fans - both young and old, are captivated by fairy tales, as the company rode on the fevered frenzy of 'Frozen.' The mega hit movie smashed the billion mark at the international box office when it was released. Guardian reports that 'Frozen' has become so prevailing that one of the protagonists' names, Elsa, became the top 500 names for baby girls in the U.S.

While the Prince Charming spin-off is said to be in development, Disney's live-action adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast' is well in progress. The second movie stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad and Ian Mckellen, and is directed by Bill Condon. This project is expected bring the Disney Renaissance favorite back to the big screen. 'Beauty and the Beast' will release on March 17, 2017, around the same time 'Cinderella' was released this year.
