Deitrick Haddon, 'Preachers of LA' Pastor, Says He's 'Resurrecting the Youth Choir Movement' (VIDEO)
Gospel singer and Pastor, Deitrick Haddon, released his long awaited album, LXW (League of Xtraordinary Worshipers), where he leads a staggering 150-voice gospel choir with sounds of youthful praise.
The choir debuted their album on Apr. 22, and features 150 singers from L.A. along with music pioneers in choir music sub-genres including Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard as well as a new generation of Gospel superstars (Jessica Reedy).
Haddon's goal was to create music for youth choirs. He is quoted as saying, LXW is "resurrecting the youth choir movement." His press release states, "This project truly offers music that choirs across the country can sink their teeth into and actually sing. It leaves opportunities for choirs to showcase the hard-to-duplicate vocal calisthenics that crowds for centuries have come to love. Sopranos, altos, tenors can shine separately and together on each track."
Haddon showcased his choir as the opener of the "Celebration of Gospel" on BET earlier this year. He was listed in the show's highlights and it was talked about for days after the Celebration of Gospel aired.
The singer is quoted as talking about his memories of a time when choirs had a stronger presence in the African-American church. "Every fifth Sunday", he says, "was youth Sunday." Young people had a platform, and they had music that was made specifically for them. I want to bring that back."
His song "Great God" surely exudes the youthful energy the controversial Pastor was going for. "Great God" is about the awesomeness of God, and how He is able to do anything. The project features a number of high-energy songs such as "He Keeps on Blessing Me" and "God Stepped In" as well as ballads "Tis So Sweet." Haddon also includes a couple of spoken word pieces like "Xtraordinary" and "Sweet."
The "Preachers of L.A." star is also working on a New Faith-based series "Fix My Choir," with "Destiny's Child" member Michelle Williams. It will air on the Oxygen channel. In addition, the minister is coming back for season 2 of the reality show "Preachers of L.A."
Haddon's LXW (League of Xtraordinary Worshipers) is now available for purchase on iTunes.
