Darren Wilson Michael Brown Shooting: Teen Robbed Store; Stole Cigarillos
In the wake of the announcement that Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson will not be indicted over the death of Michael Brown, a court testimony confirmed that the 19-year-old stole two handfuls of cigarillos from a convenience store minutes before he was fatally shot.
According to the testimony of Brown's friend, Dorian Johnson, before a St. Louis County grand jury, he ran into his friend, whom he calls "Big Mike" while he was on his way to a convenient store to buy cigarillos.
However, the two decided to smoke marijuana together so Brown went with Johnson inside the store to buy his own cigarrillo. But according to Johnson, instead of paying for the items that he took, Big Mike shoved his way past the clerk.
Wilson also testified that the possession of cigarillos was what triggered the altercation between himself and the African-American teen.
During an interview with the ABC news, Wilson recounted his encounter with Brown on August 9.
According to Wilson, he was on his way to grab lunch by himself when he saw Brown and Johnson walking in the middle of the street. Wilson said he told the pair to walk on the sidewalk instead.
While Johnson ignored his instruction, Wilson said that Brown exchanged explicit words with him.
"He had said, 'F*** what you have to say'," Wilson told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, adding that those were the first words spoken to him by the teen.
During the exchange of obscenities, Wilson said he then noticed that Brown was holding cigarillos and that the pair matched the description of the suspected cigar thieves, which was reported by a convenient store earlier in the day.
According to Wilson, he then radioed for backup and at which point, he said he parked the car and tried to step out of his vehicle when Brown slammed his car door.
"I ... again taken aback because I've never been trapped in my car," Wilson said during the interview.
He added that Brown stared him down and tried to intimidate him, and when he stared back, punches started flying.
The officer said that he began backpedaling, but Brown was still coming at him.
"He kinda starts to lean forward like he's gonna tackle me," he told Stephanopoulos, "If he's gonna tackle me, he's gonna tackle me at that point. And I looked down the barrel of my gun and I fired."
