Dallas Cowboys NFL 2015 News, Rumors: Tony Romo’s Restructured Deal Paves Way for Adrian Peterson?
The Dallas Cowboys recently restructured Tony Romo's deal yet again, which creates $12.8 million in cap space for the team this year, as first reported by Pro Football Talk. According to the report, a source with knowledge of the situation said that the move was not a negotiated restructuring, but an automatic conversion of $16 million of Romo's base salary to a signing bonus. That would put his salary for 2015 at $1 million.
The report suggests that the move may not be a coincidence, with disgruntled Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson slated to have a base salary of $12.75 million this coming season. Eric Edholm of Shutdown Corner adds fuel to the fire pointing out that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Peterson once had a conversation that bordered on tampering, wherein Peterson reportedly told Jones he wanted to retire a Cowboy. Edholm also notes that as a high school player in Texas, Peterson grew up a Cowboys fans who went to their games, and even in their locker room.
Before the restructuring, Romo had hinted that he was willing to take a pay cut to make room for the re-signing of free agent DeMarcus Murray.
"DeMarco ended up asking me, 'Why don't you take a pay cut?'" Romo said while appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday. "I was like, 'I will. I will take a pay cut to go do this.' I was like, 'They're going to restructure me and the whole thing,' that's the same thing in some ways just for salary-cap purposes. He was like, 'OK, now we're back to being friends.' 'You're really worried about me? I would take $5 million less if it meant getting you back'. He knew that," as reported by ESPN.
The Cowboys wound up not approaching Romo for a paycut, and Murray signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for five years and $42 million.
