Cyber Attack News: Police Arrested VTech Toys Hacking Suspect
British police has recently arrested a 21-year-old man for being suspected as a computer hacker who infiltrated the system of VTech Holdings Ltd. This company is a manufacturer of electronic toys for children. The suspect could be either acting alone or part of a group of hackers. However, it is likely that he is part of a group. The said individual was detained by the police in Bracknell, west of London as the ongoing investigation on the possible larger and more malicious criminal intent related to the hacking incident.
According to a statement from the South East Regional Organized Crime unit, the suspect was detained in connection with the November cyber attack against VTech Holdings Ltd. Approximately 6.4 million online profiles of children and 4.9 million accounts of parents on company's system were the target of the hacking. VTech is a Hong Kong-based manufacturer of electronic toys for children. It also manufactures and sells smartwatches and tablets.
The cyber attack was most likely for financial gains but the hackers were unsuccessful in stealing credit card information. However, the alarming thing about the computer hacking incidence was the fact that the hackers were able to access the private profiles of the children.
According to a blog article posted on Motherboard, the hackers were able to obtain the photos, chat records and other information of the children who have profiles on the company's system. The information could be used in other more malicious intentions. Hacking into the system of VTech seems to be relatively easy for the hackers since the system is reported to be vulnerable to a well-known hacking technique.
