'Creed' Movie Cast News, Rocky Spin-Off Fim Rumors: Boxers Andre Ward & Tony Bellew Set to Join ‘Rocky’ Spinoff Film
Boxers Andre Ward and Tony Bellew are in talks to join the upcoming MGM 'Rocky' spinoff movie, entitled 'Creed', which tells the story of Apollo Creed's grandson's rise to boxing fame.
For those that may not know, Apollo Creed is a top boxer in Sylvester Stallone's 'Rocky' film series.
Ryan Coogler of 'Fruitvale Station' is set to direct the upcoming film, and Michael B. Jordan is set to play the lead role of Adonis, Creed's grandson. Additionally, Sylvester Stallone is set to reprise his role of Rocky Balboa, the mentor of the young boxer.
On that note, Stallone originally played Rocky in the 1976 film. Despite Stallone's return, there is no word yet if Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed opposite Stallone in the same film, will be reappearing in the film as Apollo, in some sort of flashback or dream sequence, since he was killed in 'Rocky IV'.
Bellew is in talks to play Creed's main opponent, a fighter called "Pretty Ricky Porter," while Ward's role has not yet been revealed. If negotiations push through, both boxers are expected to appear in the ring, alongside Jordan and Stallone, as opponents of Adonis Creed.
Other characters expected to appear are Adonis' deaf half-sister; Adonis' love interest; Joe, who co-owns a gym with Rocky; Pete, a former boxer; and Marcel, who assists Adonis in his training.
Coogler was signed with WME in 2012 and quickly got to work on 'Creed'. He called the film his dream project, was quick to secure Stallone as Rocky, and received the green light from MGM to go ahead with the project.
Coogler is looking to start shooting 'Creed' in Las Vegas and Philadelphia in January 2015. No release date has been announced.
Bellew is a former light heavyweight champion in the Commonwealth league. He is also a former three-time champion in England's Amateur Boxing Association of England. Ward is the current World Boxing Association champion in the super middleweight division.
