Copts Church Ambush News: Event Attacked by Armed Muslim Brotherhood

A planned commemorative event was supposed to happen to honor the 40th day of the 21 Coptic Christian's beheaded by ISIS in Egypt, but it was ambushed by a Muslim militant group who call themselves the 'Muslim Brotherhood'.

There were at least six Christians wounded with three suffering from serious injuries. The local priest at the Virgin Mary Church in Al-Our, Fr. Makar Issa, called for police protection but came late and were noted to have loose protection over the church.

"I called the police many times and asked them to come to guard us but they came late and after their arrival they didn't guard the church. They stopped in the entrance of the village. Even still they allowed the cars of the attackers to enter the village and attack us and the church without any intervention from them to protect us," he says.

He then charged the police for "inaction, indifference and complicity," claiming negligence towards the attack.

The incident had happened on Friday, when young Muslims gathered at the Minya governate after midday prayer. Later on that night, a small group of militants attacked the church with Molotov cocktails injuring a total of seven people and left one car burning, according to Daily News Egypt.

Residents who witnessed the attack said, "They shot guns at the church and pelted the church with stones and blocks."

"They smashed the sign of the church, destroying the ground of the church yard and breaking the widows of the service buildings of the church. They also burned a car that was parked in the front of the church," said Father Issa.

The church wherein the attack had happened was made in honor for the 21 Coptic Christians, who are now considered Christian martyrs in Al Our. 13 of the beheaded Copts were residents and workers of the small community.
