'Coach' Reboot, Cast News: '90s NBC TV Show Returns with Craig T. Nelson

The highly successful 1990s sitcom, "Coach," from NBC will return as a straight-to-series, 13-episode show. Craig T. Nelson will reprise his role as Coach Hayden Fox and creator Barry Kemp will come back as the show's script writer.

The original series ended after nine seasons and after Fox and his wife decide to adopt a son. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will return after 18 years.

The series will begin with Fox coming out of coaching retirement when his son asks him to become assistant coach to his son's new Pennsylvania Ivy League team. While the previous show focused on a father-daughter relationship, this series looks like it will focus around the relationship between father and son.

No other casting choices besides Nelson have been announced. Nelson won an Emmy for his role on the show in 1992. Nelson starred in Parenthood since then and was asked about a "Coach" sequel during the last shootings of the show.

According to Nelson, he and Kemp had been thinking about a sequel for a while, "We're talking about it. I'm really at a quandary. But I've been approached and we're thinking about it and talked through it a little bit," he said.

The idea of a "Coach" sequel was pitched in meeting with NBC along with Universal. The two agreed and signed the 13 episode contract. This action required that other meetings with CBS, ABC and Fox were to be canceled. The show will be filmed with the classic multi camera approach.

The original series starred Nelson along with Jerry Van Dyke as Luther, Bill Fagerbakke as assistant coast Dauber, Shelly Fabares as Nelson's wife, Christine and Clare Carey as daughter Kelly Fox.
