Cleveland Indians MLB 2015 News: Blue Jays to Name Mike Shapiro as Team President
CBSSports.com reports that Cleveland Indians president Mark Shapiro is set to move up north to take over the same job with the Toronto Blue Jays. According to sources close to the team, the announcement is set to be made early this week.
Shapiro will be replacing the retiring longtime Jays president Paul Beeston. As noted by the report, Beeston is expected to remain with Toronto for the rest of the year, which means Shapiro might not take office in Toronto until next season.
According to the CBSSports.com report, Shapiro intends to keep Alex Anthopoulos as general manager. Anthopoulos has done a great job this season, building a team that currently stands in first place in the competitive AL East, and having traded for superstars Troy Tulowitzki and David Price.
The Jays are in the midst of the longest playoff drought in baseball. The have not made it past the regular season since winning back-to-back World Series titles in 1992-93. They are set to break that this year, being 18 games over .500 at 74-56.
The Jays are 21-5 in August following their league-shaking trade deadline deals, and appear to be legit contenders to win it all this season.
As pointed out by CBSSports.com, the Blue Jays pursued POriloes general manager Dan Duquette for the president's job last winter, but had Orioles owner get in the way, declining to allow Duquette to interview for the job. Toronto also had discussions with Dave Dombrowski in the time between his release from the Tigers and his hiring by the Red Sox, according to the report.
Shapiro served as general manager, assistant farm director and farm director in Cleveland before becoming the Indians' team president. As noted CBSSPorts.com, he oversaw the renovations at Cleveland's Progressive Field, and has led the team to outperform their low payroll (bottom third in the league at $80 million). The Jays, in contrast, have a $130 million payroll.
