Cleveland Cavaliers NBA 2015 Rumors: Mo Williams Reportedly Interested in Joining Cavs
Veteran journeyman and former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams is reportedly interested in making a return to northeast Ohio when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1 according to Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
The 32-year-old spent two and a half years with the Cavs, and was part of the 66-win team, when he also made his lone All-Star appearance as LeBron James' sidekick. According to the report, Williams is seeking a multi-year deal, and has put his current team, the Charlotte Hornets, along with Cavs as the two teams on his wish list.
The Cavs have a number of players entering free agency of some sort (Iman Shumpert, Matthew Dellavedova, etc.), and also has some notable players (James, Kevin Love) that can opt out of the final year of their contracts. As noted by Haynes, it is likely that the most the Cavs can offer Williams is their taxpayer mid-level exception or the veteran's minimum.
It became obvious during the past Finals that the Cavs desperately need someone outside of James and the injured Kyrie Irving, who can create his own shot. Williams also had an outstanding relationship with James while he was part of the Cavs.
The sweet shooting guard was acquired by the Cavs prior to the 2008-2009 season from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Cavs traded Williams in February 2011 to the Los Angeles Clippers for Baron Davis, and the pick that turned into Irving. Since then, he has bounced around the league, playing or teams like the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Williams started the past season with the Wolves before being traded to the Hornets. He finished with season averages of 14.2 points, and 6.2 assists. He scored a career-high 52 points back in January against the Indiana Pacers.
