Cleveland Browns News: Wide Receiver Josh Gordon Tests Positive Against Substance Abuse Policy
Talented but troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon of the Cleveland Browns, after failing another test regarding the NFL's substance-abuse policy, recently found himself tied to a potential one-year ban, reports ESPN citing league sources.
A source confirmed a Pro Football Talk report that said Gordon tested positive for alcohol. Because of his DWI arrest last July, the league can test him for alcohol.
"Clearly, we are very disappointed to hear the latest report regarding Josh. At this point, due to the confidential nature of the NFL's substance abuse policy, we have not been made aware by the league of a failed test. We are in the process of gathering more information and will provide further comment at the appropriate time," the Cleveland Browns said in a released statement.
The wildly talented Gordon, who led the NFL with 1,646 yards in the 2013 season, has had a long history of troubles of this sort tracing back to his dismissal from Baylor after a failed marijuana test.
Before his breakout year in 2013, he was suspended for the first two games of that season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. In July 5, 2014, he was charged for driving while impaired after speeding in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Were it not for a new punishment policy implemented by the NFL, he would have missed all of the 2014 season, but instead was allowed to return after missing 10 games.
His latest violation subjects him to a yearlong ban, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press.
Both Gordon's agent Drew Rosenhaus, and NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy declined comment.
The 2013 Pro Bowl selection returned for five games last season after his suspension, but failed to follow through on his spectacular 2013 season. Then, before the Browns' last regular season game on December 28 versus Baltimore, Cleveland suspended him for violating team rules.
Gordon was a second round pick in the 2012 supplemental draft, and signed a four-year contract worth $5.3 million as a rookie.
