Chicago Blackhawks News: Patrick Kane Target of Rape Investigation
Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane has been subjected to an investigation in the Buffalo-area suburb of Hamburg, N.Y., Yahoo Sports reports. The Buffalo News, which first came out with the story, did not mention the nature of the investigation in their report.
And while Hamburg Police Chief Gregory G. Wickett initially neither confirmed nor denied that there was an investigation being conducted on Kane, Tim Graham of The Buffalo News reported thru Twitter that it was a "rape investigation."
"We are aware of the matter and are in the process of gathering information. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," the Blackhawks said in a statement.
According to an updated report by The Buffalo News, a local woman has accused Kane of sexual assault, and that the said woman went to a hospital where tests using a rape kit were performed.
The 26-year-old three-time Stanley Cup winner has not been charged with any crime.
In case charges are filed, this would not be the first time Kane would find himself in trouble with the law. Back in 2009, he was arrested for assaulting a Buffalo cab driver stemming from a dispute over the taxi fare. Kane eventually pleaded to disorderly conduct, a noncriminal violation.
Defense lawyer Paul Cambria Jr., who represented Kane in that case, declined to comment when reached by The Buffalo News on Wednesday.
Kane is set to enter the first of his eight-year, $84 million contract extension he signed last summer.
After being selected as the first overall pick by Chicago in the 2007 draft, Kane has accumulated 557 points in 576 career games. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy - given to the playoffs' most valuable player in 2013 - and has been an integral part of the Blackhawks' last three Stanley Cups.
