Chelsea 2015 News: Forward Diego Costa Banned Three Games for Violent Conduct

Chelsea striker Diego Costa is scheduled to miss the club's next three domestic fixtures following a Football Association charge of violent conduct was upheld, BBC.com reports.

The ban stemmed from an incident before halftime of Chelsea's 2-0 win against Arsenal when the 26-year-old Costa appeared to rake his hands twice across Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny's face before chest-bumping him to the ground.

Shortly after that, Arsenal defender Gabriel came to the rescue of his teammate, which led to both him and Costa receiving yellow cards. He was booked again a minute later for flicking a boot at the Chelsea player, but as ESPN FC notes, the FA has decided to revoke Gabriel's red card.

"An FA charge against Diego Costa for violent conduct not seen by the match officials but caught on video has been found proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing," a previous FA statement read.

"The Chelsea forward will, therefore, serve the standard penalty of a three-match suspension with immediate effect."

As noted by BBC.com, Costa's ban will cover Chelsea's League Cup match at Walsall on Wednesday, as well as their Premier League matches against Newcastle and Southampton.

Chelsea has since appealed the charge.

"We are extremely disappointed with the FA Regulatory Commission's decision to suspend Diego Costa," the club statement read. "We will await their written reasons before commenting further."

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has also commented on the situation who said he is left "scratching his head" by the FA's decision to overturn Gabriel's ban.

"I'm not sure why [Ibrahim] Afellay had a two-game ban when I see news of other situations, which seemed to be deemed violent conduct and they get wiped off," Hughes told BBC Radio 5, referring to Ibrahim Afellay's ban for slapping West Brom's Craig Gardner back in August reduced from three games to two.

"We keep asking fro explanations from the FA about why they come to decisions against us - or we're getting different ones to other clubs. This is a prime example of that. We're bemused by it."
