Charlie Hunnam News: 'Sons of Anarachy' Actor to Star in New Series - 'American Drug Lord'

Actor Charlie Hunnam recently ended his long role as a criminal motorcycle club leader to immediately pick up a role as another criminal.

This time he's projected to play a Cartel leader in "American Drug Lord," focused on the crime career of Edgar Valez.

Deadline writes, "Legendary will produce with Plan B's Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner and Hunnam. It is based on the story of Edgar Valdez, a high school football player from Texas who would become the only U.S. citizen to rise to the level of cartel leader in Mexico. From his base in Acapulco, Valdez, who brought the nickname La Barbie that was given him by his high school football coach, made $130 million in one year moving drugs from Colombia.

The report went on to add, "He became increasingly feared and allegedly ratcheted up the violence that involved filming the brutal executions of rivals and posting them on the Internet. As the drug riches escalated along with the violence, the rival cartels turned on one another, with the help of crooked cops. Valdez's life became a struggle to stay alive."

On that note, "American Sniper" scribe, Jason Hall is set to write the script.

It is also reported that Legendary acquired the original 2011 Rolling Stone article about Valdez a.k.a. La Barbie.

Hunnam is no stranger to this type of role after his praised performance as Jax in FX's "Sons of Anarchy."

Hunnam also happens to not be a stranger to Legendary films. He's starred in Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and is set to star in "Crimson Peak," both films of the studio.

Aside from this role, Hunnam is also expected to star in "Knights of the Roundtable" as King Arthur.

It was also said the actor was the forerunner to star in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" adaptation but turned it downed due to schedule conflicts.
