Charleston Church Shooting Update: Dylan Roof Indicted on 33 Federal Counts
Dylan Roof, who was apprehended for shooting up a church in South Carolina and killing nine people, has been officially indicted on 33 federal counts, including some charges which can result in the death penalty.
Roof is already facing nine murder charges in state court, and the twenty year old was indicted on 33 federal counts on July 22nd, about one month after he opened fire in a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Due to the fact that the state of South Carolina does not have hate crime laws, and the massacre was motivated by race, the federal government had to step in.
Roof attacked the Emanuel A.M.E. Church on June 17th during a Bible study group meeting.
"You are raping our women and taking over our country," said Roof to the victims, all of whom were black. Police later linked him to a racist manifest on the internet, which read, "I have no choice. I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is the most historic city in my state and, at one time, had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the Internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me."
One of the crimes that Roof has been charged with is killing someone while obstructing religious freedom, which makes him eligible to face the death penalty.
Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, has announced that "no decision has been made whether to seek that penalty."
