CBS Summer TV Schedule News: Network Orders Full Season of 'Supergirl'

CBS has been the only network without its own superhero show for some time, but it has decided to change that.

The network has given Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist, an early full season order. The executive producer of the series is Greg Berlanti, and it will premiere this fall.

Benoist will be playing the role of Kara Zor-El, also known a Supergirl. She escaped her home planet, Krypton, before it was destroyed and landed on planet Earth.

She was taken in as a foster child by the Danvers family, who taught her how to regulate her powers, which are the same as those of Superman, who is he cousin.

The series on CBS will be starting off with Kara at age 24, when she makes the choice to embrace her long supressed powers.

She will be forced to become a hero by an unexpected disaster. After this, she will start to use her powers to help people in her city, and the citizens will call her "Supergirl."

The show also stars Calista Flockhart, who will play Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks, who plays Jimmy Olson, David Harewood, portraying Hank Henshaw, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, Malina Weissman, who will be playing young Kara, and Laura Benanti, who will be a recurring character, playing Supergirl's mother, Alura Zor-El.

This is the first announcement that CBS has made regarding their pickups and renewals for the 2015 season.

The remainder of the shows that it will be featuring in the upcoming season will likely be announced sometime this week.

The network will be presenting the 2015-2106 line-up on Wednesday, May 13.
