Carolina Panthers NFL 2015 News: Franchised Closing In on $100 Million Contract with Cam Newton
It was no secret that the Carolina Panthers wanted to get a deal done with quarterback Cam Newton before training camp started. It seems they're right on track, as multiple reports have said that both sides are expected to reach an agreement within the week.
The reports suggest that the polarizing quarterback would be getting a contract in the neighborhood of $100 spread across five years. Newton was slated to make $14.67 million in the last year of his rookie contract, and should he get the expected five-year deal, it will keep him with the Panthers through 2020.
While Newton hasn't been as impressive as he was during his spectacular rookie season when he threw for 4,051 yards, had 21 TDs, and ran for 706 yards, he's led the Panthers to winning the NFC South in back-to-back seasons despite struggling with injuries. He continues to be a top-15 quarterback in a league where it's requisite that you pay a quarterback of that caliber.
Should the Panthers and Newton reach a deal as expected, there's more work to be done for both sides. The Panthers have to shore up most of the roster, as they've provided Newton with one of the league's worst supporting casts the past few seasons.
Newton, for his part, has to come back from an injury riddled season that saw him turn in career lows in passing yards, touchdown passes, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, yards per passing attempt, yards per rushing attempt, and quarterback rating.
But word has it that after an ankle surgery last offseason, and two transverse process fractures in his back after his car accident, Newton will be coming into the season the healthiest he's been in years. That should bode well for a Panthers team that appears to have heavily invested in their quarterback.
