‘Carol’ Movie Review: Tood Haynes’ Film Joins UK’s 50 Best Films Of 2015, Emerges As Oscars Christmas Film

Todd Haynes' romance drama film "Carol" emerged as one of the 50 best films of 2015 in the UK and in fact, the fim was regarded as an Oscar quality Christmas film.

One of UK's 50 best films of the year, Haynes' lesbian themed cinematic adaptation of Patricia Highsmith novel "The Price of Salt" might not have the same brand of hostility, but "Carol" did its best to exemplify its own cinematic novelty, according to The Guardian.

According to Examiner, "Carol" is comparable to a Christmas film, since it showcased "complex" and "compelling" characters, which slightly deviated from the typical wholesome charactes and cute characters. The films lead actresses, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, both had their exceptional performance in the film, which made them deserving for Academy Award nominations.

"Carol" mirrors "Brokeback Mountain" as its "direct male equivalent," as it showcased complicated human interaction blended with empathetic human experience. The story themes were demonstrated by Blanchett and Mara, as well as the script's integrity. Such elements had led to the film having a sophisticated and pristine quality.

Set in 1950s New York, "Carol" follows a department store clerk who dreams of a better life; however, she falls for an older, married woman. The film stars Nik Pajic, Kevin Crowley, Cory Michael Smith, John Magaro, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, Kyle Chandler, Mara, and Blanchett, among others.

With Haynes at the helm of the film, "The Trap" and "Mrs. Harris" writer Phyllis Nagy was on board to pen the screenplay of the film. Dororthy Berwin, Danny Perkins, Thorsten Schumacher, Andrew Upton, Christine Vachon, Harvey Weinstein, and Bob Weinstein co-produced the film, among others.

Haynes' "Carol" aired in theaters in the United States on Nov. 20.
