Cannes Film Festival 2015 News: Strict Dress Code Prohibits Flat Bottom Shoes?

Cannes has made the news for all the wrong reasons when film producer Valeria Richter was denied entry for turning up in flats for the Film Festival.

Richter, who has part of her left foot amputated, speaking to BBC, said that the red carpet officials pointed at her shoes and said, "No, no, this won't work, you can't get in like this." Reportedly, she was stopped four times on her way into the premiere of Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees, before she was eventually let in after explaining her situation.

Speaking to BBC, after the festival, she said that she couldn't keep her balance in heels since she had her big toe and part of her left foot amputated. She also added that many of her colleagues who didn't wear heels were rejected and did not come in.

The director of "Amy,' Asif Kapadia said that his wife was even initially turned away from a screening for wearing flat shoes, though she was eventually let in, according to The Guardian.

Actress Emily Blunt, who has spoken against this atrocious rule, said in a presss conference that all women should be allowed to wear flats. She said, "I think everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn't wear high heels anymore. I prefer to wear Converse sneakers." She later walked the red carpet in sky-high stiletto sandals, according to Variety.

The Festival Director, Thierry Fremaux tweeted about the controversy denying any rule on heels, as he said, "For the steps (red carpet), nothing has changed: Smoking (tuxedo), black tie. No mention of heels."

He also released a statement, which said, "Regarding the dress code for the red carpet screenings, rules have not changed throughout the years (Tuxedo, formal dress for Gala screenings), and there is no specific mention about the height of the women's heels as well as for men's. Thus, in order to make sure that this rule is respected, the festival's hosts and hostesses were reminded of it."
