Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL 2015 News: Bucs Sign Lavonte David to $50.25 Million Extension
Tampa Bay Buccaneers' linebacker Lavonte David and the team agreed to terms on Sunday to a five-year extension, CBSSports.com reports. According to David's agents Ron Butler and Tony Fleming, the deal is worth $50.25 million, with $25.56 million in guaranteed money.
David, a 2012 second-round pick, was going into the final year of his rookie deal, which would have paid him just under $740,000 this season. After three stellar seasons in the league, David will now be the highest-paid 4-3 linebacker in the NFL, and the fifth-highest paid linebacker overall, behind Justin Houston, Clay Matthews, Ryan Kerrigan and Bobby Wagner, CBSSports.com notes.
The report also points out that of the four linebackers making more than David, Matthews is the only one who signed his extension before 2015. His five-year, $66 million deal was inked back in April 2013.
The 25-year-old led the Bucs in tackles in each of his three seasons with the team. As pointed out by the CBSSports.com report, David also tallied 20 tackles for a loss in 2012"”the second-highest total ever for a rookie. He was named first-team All-Pro the year after that, when he picked off five passes, apart from leading the team in tackles, while also notching a safety.
In 46 games with the Bucs, David has totaled 430 tackles, 10 sacks, six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and six interceptions. He managed to be selected to the first-team All-Pro in 2013 despite not making the Pro Bowl.
Before the deal was reached, he was set to become a free agent at the end of the season. David will now enjoy a massive pay increase from his four-year, $3.6 million rookie deal. NFL Media's Rand Getlin, reported in late July that the Bucs and David's camp had been in negotiations dating all the way back to the draft.
The Bucs is set to officially announce the deal in a Monday press conference.
