Box Office Results Update: 'Hobbit 3' Wins in Sales in Finals Days of 2014
Reports are saying that Peter Jackson's third 'Hobbit' series installment topped the charts with the most ticket sales in the final days of the year 2014. The box office results conclude that an estimated $21.9 million in tickets was sold in the U.S and Canada.
Behind that came Disney's film version of the dark Broadway musical 'Into The Woods' - this placed at the No. 2 spot with $19.1 million, while the World War II drama 'Unbroken', directed by Angelina Jolie came third with $18.4 million.
Incidentally, 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' managed to lay hands on another $9.3 million from New Year's Day screenings for a four-day take through Sunday of $31.2 million. It now sits pretty with a domestic total of $220.8 million since its December 17 release. The figures are based on estimates by Rentrak, the tracking firm.
The only new weekend release was a horror film - 'The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death' - it opened in fourth place with $15.1 million. Another sequel, 'Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb' was in fifth position with $14.5 million in ticket sales.
Other year end releases were 'Unbroken' - it was Angelina Jolie's second directorial venture and narrates the real-life story of Olympic runner Louis Zamperini who was imprisoned for two years as a prisoner of war in Japan.
Beyond that, the controversial film - 'The Interview' - a comedy about two journalists who were recruited by the CIA to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also released. The movie starred Seth Rogen and James Franco and grossed an estimated $2.8 million for its opening four-day holiday weekend a week ago.
