'Bourne 5' News: Matt Damon Discusses Film's Inspiration
Fans of actor Matt Damon should all be excited to know that he plans to return to his most iconic role as the international agent Jason Bourne in the upcoming 'Bourne 5' project.
It's been eight years since we've seen the actor in 'Bourne Ultimatum,' which still stands as the most successful movie of his career. Actor Jeremy Renner stepped in as the lead in 2012's 'Bourne Legacy,' however he hasn't been half as effective as Damon.
In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Damon reveals some details on the upcoming project. He also offers to explain why such the long hiatus.
"We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change," Damon said. "What does the character have to say?"
He goes on to explain how NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden gave him and the director inspiration for the next movie's direction.
"Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world," he explained. "It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."
"We're starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy. And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of-," Damon stops without completing his sentence.
The film is set to also star Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons, Tommy Lee Jones, and Alicia Vikander. 'Bourne 5' is expected to premiere in theaters on July 29, 2016.
