'Blurred Lines' Lawsuit News: Robin Thicke And Pharrell Knock Trial Fine Down By $2 Million
The final verdict for the 'Blurred Lines' case left artists Robin Thicke and Pharrell in a very sticky situation, however holding on to their side of the story, they sought out to appeal the ruling.
The results of this action has finally been disclosed, with the two singers getting the trial fine from $7.3 million to $5.3 million.
"As a result, half of all future royalties from "Blurred Lines" will go to the Gaye family. Rapper T.I., who is credited as a writer on the 2013 hit, and the artists' labels Universal, Interscope and Star Trak Entertainment are also held liable under the new ruling. T.I.'s profits from the original ruling have accordingly been cut from $1.6 million to $357,630," writes EW.
Thicke and Pharrell were initially charged with copyright infringement with the uncanny similarities with their highly successful 'Blurred Lines' song and Marvin Gaye's classic 1977 hit 'Got to Give it Up.' With the judge denying Thicke's request for a whole new trial, the artist decided to set out to appeal the verdict.
"It comes right down to knowing the difference between being inspired and stealing," Thicke told the New York Times. "Why would I want to, or have to, steal from anybody to make my music? Inspiration can be subliminal. As a songwriter, you're obviously trying to create a brand-new feeling that comes from your heart. But you can't help but be inspired by all of the greatness that came before you."
"For me, it will not, it has not, changed my process in any way," he continues. "But yes, many artists and writers have voiced their concerns to me about this. And if the verdict holds up, I believe that it will have a ripple effect on the arts and the industry in general. I mean, if you made the first superhero movie, do you own the concept of the superhero?"
