Blue Jays MLB 2015 News: Franchise Acquires David Price
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired former Cy Young Award winner David Price Thursday afternoon. Following what is widely considered a "shocking" trade for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki earlier in the week, the Blue Jays appear to be bent on making a serious push in the American League East.
In the trade, the send three left-handed pitchers to the Detroit Tigers, with Daniel Norris deemed the prized return for the Tigers. Matt Boyd and Jairo Labourt also join him in moving to Detroit.
As Yahoo Sports notes, the 30-year-old Price will be a free agent next year, and is expected to command one of the top pitcher contracts in history despite being joined in the market by names like Johnny Cueto, Jordan Zimmerman and Jeff Samardzija.
Price has made at least 27 starts in every season since 2010, as Yahoo Sports points out, and has finished in the top six of the Cy Young voting two times. He has also led the AL over a season in wins, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts.
As the report highlights, Price has been having one of the best seasons of his career this year, posting a 2.53 ERA and averaging nearly seven innings a start for the Tigers, who acquired the durable and accomplished pitcher last year in another trade-deadline deal in which Detroit sent away Drew Smyly, Austin Jackson and Willy Adames.
With the two deals this week, the Blue Jays have acquired the best position player in the market in Tulowitzki, as well as the best pitcher in the market. They are seven games behind the New York Yankees and two games back in the wild-card race with 60 games to play, as pointed out by the Yahoo Sports report.
Toronto currently sports a .500 record, with the Tigers just 1 ½ games behind them.
