'Black Panther' News: Ava Duvernay Confirms that She Won't Be Directing the Marvel Film

It seems as if the Ava Duvernay rumors surrounding Marvel's 'Black Panther' movie can now finally be put to rest with the director's official statement.

Duvernay has gained critical success in the film industry with her work behind the film 'Selma,' which is what also caught Marvel's attention. While the news of the two being in negotiations for her directing 'Black Panther' got a lot of fans excited, Duvernay has recently come forward in an interview with Essence to denounce her candidacy.

In this she states:

"I guess I'll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July weekend and Essence weekend!

I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me. I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs. In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn't see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later. I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it."

This isn't the first time we've heard of a director dropping a Marvel project because of creative differences, but its at least a relief that Duvernay didn't commit to something her heart wasn't in.

As to who will direct the titular film is still up in the air, although it has been stated that Marvel is in search for more diversity in their directors.

'Black Panther' plans to arrive in theaters in 2018.
