'Black Jesus' TV Show Given Green Light; Controversial New Series Follows Black Jesus in Modern Day Compton

Adult Swim announced on Monday a new action comedy about a Black Jesus living in Compton. The show comes to television from the Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder.

The new half-hour live-action scripted comedy Black Jesus will feature "Jesus" living in present-day Compton, Calif. His daily mission will be to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.

Newcomer Gerald "Slink" Johnson (Grand Theft Auto V) will star as Black Jesus. The rest of the cast consists of Charlie Murphy brother of actor Eddie Murphy, Corey Holcomb, Kali Hawk, Andra Fuller and The Boondocks' John Witherspoon.

Black Jesus will premiere this year but a date and episode count have not yet been determined.

The American cable network Adult Swim is known for its risqué, unorthodox and often bizarre content. Many of the series on the network feature are developed in stark contrast with traditional American television programs.

McGruder's popular show the Boondocks often makes many references to God and Jesus. Statements that have created an uproar about the completion of Jesus skin and his race. In the popular family-based cartoon even features a character named Reverend Ruckus who is constantly making outlandish comments about Jesus.

Actor Tyler Perry was reportedly infuriated by his depiction in Season 3 episode "Pause", which aired in 2010. The episode stars Winston Jerome, a parody of Perry, as a "closeted, cross-dressing cult leader whose love of the Christian faith is a mask for his true sexuality," in what the Los Angeles Times described as "one of the sharpest public criticisms of Perry."

People on social media are not quite sure what McGruders angle will be with Black Jesus. Although television and Hollywood have both been doing well with Christians content, viewers think this comedic cartoon might serve more as an insult to the its Christian leader than anything else.

"To those who'll say that there have been modern-day updates of the Gospel that have worked, I say yes, I agree. But this is a comedy on Adult Swim," a commenter posted.
