BET Awards 2015: Lecrae Makes History as First Rapper to Win Gospel Artist of the Year [VIDEO]
Sunday night at the BET Music Awards Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae made history as he won Gospel Artist of the Year and at the same time became the first rapper to do so.
Other artists in the category were Mali Music, Erica Campbell, Deitrick Haddon, Fred Hammond and Michelle Williams.
It was his first BET Award, and second nomination after he was up for one in 2013. This award becomes the fourth of the year for Lecare as he has also received a Grammy, Billboard, and Stellar Award.
Lecrae's Anomaly has gained the emcee mainstream success as he has made appearances all over network TV, including 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon'. Anomaly has also seen him make strides in the hip-hop community as his name has been thrown around among some of the most relevant rappers in music right now.
The Reach Records rapper recently revealed he will be releasing a book, "Unashamed."
In the book he will detail his difficult past, including childhood abuse, struggles with drugs and alcoholism, bouts of depression, and a close call suicide attempt.
"I am writing 'Unashamed' for all those who don't know who they are, who feel confined by the labels given to them," Lecrae shared in a press release, "This is for the outsiders looking for peace within."
As part of the book launch by B&H and Lecrae, a multi-city media and promotional tour is planned to accompany it.
