Following a two-week hiatus, "Bates Motel" returned with major turning points for the White Pinebay characters.

In the episode titled "Refraction," Norma encounters a new potential enemy who could destroy her family, while Norman starts searching for a solution to his problems.

After the housebreak, Norma visits a local hardware store to look for someone to fix her glass windows. Later in the episode, the man who is shown listening to her conversation with the store clerk arrives at the Bates Motel doors, claiming that he has been sent to fix her windows.

Chick impresses Norma with his discussion of the repair project. He admits to her that he knows Dylan and Caleb and tells her all the other things he knows about them to gain Norma's trust. He wants her to give him the location of Caleb so he can kill him for ruining his life. However, Norma tells him that she does not know his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Romero talks to Rebecca after she admits that she vandalized his home to find the key of Bob Paris. He also confronts her about her involvement in money laundering.

In the episode, Norma also asks Romero about the death of Bob. Romero admits the crime and tells her he did it for her.

The light part of the episode is the scene between Dylan and Emma, who take major leaps towards their future. Dylan goes to a job interview and impresses the interviewer. Later, he talks to Emma, who tells him about her scars. She tells him she has been hesitant about going intimate with him because of her scars. To comfort her, Dylan shows Emma his own scars too.

Towards the end of the episode, Norman and Norma discuss Dr. Edwards and the father of Norman. Norman freaks out when Dr. Edwards tells him that Norma never actually visited him, and that their conversation was all just a product of his imagination.
