Baltimore Ravens News: Franchise Releases Bernard Pierce after DUI Arrest - Jags Claim RB Off Waivers
On Wednesday, the Baltimore Ravens announced over various social media sites that they released their running back Bernard Pierce merely hours after the player's Baltimore County arrest for driving under the influence.
Police report that Pierce was driving a 2014 Ford Mustang when he was pulled over for speeding. The arresting officer noted that Pierce was struggling to pull over smoothly and had a hard time getting his driver's license out of his wallet.
The officer asked Pierce if he had been drinking. Pierce said yes and then failed a number a sobriety tests at the scene. Pierce told the officer, "Do you know what happened the last time a Ravens player got a DUI? I'm getting cut tomorrow, not like you care."
Sure enough, the general manager Ozzi Newsome contacted Pierce and was cut from the NFL team twelve hours after the arrest. The 24-year-old was in his third season with the team.
According to the Baltimore Sun, this is the third arrest of a Ravens player this offseason and the eighth arrest in 13 months. Defensive tackle Terrance Cody was let go when he was arrested on animal cruelty charges weeks ago. Cornerback Victor Hampton was cut after his DUI in North Carolina last month.
The players were warned at the beginning of the year that the Ravens staff would be stricter when it came to off-the-field issues. Raven coach John Harbaugh told the team in January, "Everybody's going to be under a different type of scrutiny from here on out, and that a good thing. Understand that it's real, it's serious, and they need to be aware of that."
Pierce has not been able to play like he did in his rookie year; he averaged 2.9 yards per carry and 4.9 yards per carry his first year.
