BAFTA 2016 Winners, Recap: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s ‘The Revenant’ Wins Best Film Award
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "The Revenant" got the spotlight at the 69th British Academy Film Awards on Feb. 14 at the Royal Opera House in London.
"The Revenant" was hailed as the best film while lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Inarritu won as best actor and best director, respectively. According to BBC, the Mexican director described the win as "overwhelming" and DiCaprio's "talent and commitment" to such "risky project" allowed the film to stay alive.
DiCaprio, who played Hugh Glass in the film, said in a statement that he had been humbled and honored, adding that he had praised the influence of the British actors on his acting career. The "Titanic" actor also mentioned that he had used his win to wish his mother a happy birthday. In fact, several newspapers featured his photos, indicating that his win put him in "pole" position to win his first acting Oscar at the end of the month.
Aside from Inarritu and DiCaprio, "Star Wars" actor John Boyega won the Rising Star Award while Brie Larson won as Best Actress in a Leading Role. "Brooklyn," "Wild Tales," and "Inside Out" won the Best British Film, Best Foreigh Language Film, and Best Animated Film, respectively.
"The Big Short's" Adam McKay and Charles Randolph won the Best Adapted Screenplay while "Mad Max: Fury Road's" Lesley Vanderwalt and Damien Martin won the Best Makeup & Hair. Jon Taylor, Chris Duesterdiek, Lon Bender, Frank Montano, Martin Hernandez, and Randy Thorn won the Best Sound accolade.
Hosted by Stephen Fry, the BAFTAs 2016 was seen by 44.5 million people, which gained a slight decline from the estimated five million audiences in 2015.
